It is a tale of ingenuity, skill and determination. In the 1830s and 1840s, German immigrant Christopher Bechtler, Sr. and his family settled in the town of Rutherfordton, NC, establishing a coining business that produced America’s first $1 gold coin and ushered in a whole new era of commerce and trade.
Like Bechtler gold coins, Chrisopher Bechtler’s historic home is an important piece of North Carolina’s history - both valuable and rare. Built in 1838, it now features multiple displays and artifacts including the actual coin press that minted America’s first one dollar gold coin. Visit the house and follow a nearby rail-trail from the house to Bechtler’s original mint site which allows a peek into a possible mine shaft, along with interpretive displays and scenic mountain views.
